Just wait it out

It’s one of my least favorite things to hear from a doctor. Recently I posted on some social networking site that I felt it was just a doctor’s way of telling you that they have no clue what’s wrong with you. If you don’t get better by Monday, come back in.

I was told how wrong I was.

Apparently what this really means is that you don’t have a bacterial infection, which can be treated with antibiotics. And they don’t want to keep throwing antibiotics at you because eventually this could lead to some antibiotic proof super bacteria that we are defenseless against.

If that’s really the reason why, I’m a big boy, you can tell me the fucking truth. Afterall, it’s what me and my insurance company are paying you for. All the ads even tell us to ask more questions. They say that we’re too afraid to ask more questions at the doctor’s office. In reality, many of us are just tired of getting the same bullshit answer which leaves us no better off than if we’d just kept our mouth shut, except that keeping our mouths shut saves us the time wasted listening to your bullshit answer.

It plays out to me that you don’t know what’s wrong with me, but you’ve ruled out bacterial infection. Because you have to keep up your patient volume so that you can make a living in today’s climate, that’s where it’s left. It’s a non-issue because the patient is still living. If it gets worse, come back. If not, problem solved. And if you come back, we’ll run a couple more tests, take your blood pressure again and temperature again, maybe even check your weight. Chances are they won’t find anything more out than they knew the last time, but you’ll be charged again, and sent on  your way with the instructions that “you’re just going to have to wait it out,” or “it’s a viral infection, and it has to run its course.”

How about a case like mine where since July 2009, I’ve been going to the doctor about once a month for the same illness, same symptoms. Sometimes I’m worse off than usual, sometimes I’m not. But I keep going back in with the same symptoms. Twice I’ve been prescribed something, but most of the time I’m told it’s only temporary, probably a viral infection that’ll go away in a few days.

Well that’s great doc, but you still haven’t answered why I’ve been getting it every couple weeks for the past 8 months. I’m on a constant roller coaster, and can’t seem to get off. It’s too financially irresponsible for the doctor to get me healthy as I’m a cash cow. I’m just tired of it.

It’s apparent that doctors don’t know, or don’t want to know, what’s wrong with me. So just admit failure, or give me leads on who might possibly be able to find out. But don’t make silly excuses for it, because you are too afraid that someone might get the fucking idea that you don’t anything more than how to prescribe the latest fucking drug the pill companies are paying you to push.

So to whomever you are that gave me some bullshit excuse for your wife or husband’s inadequacies as a doctor, seriously wake the fuck up. I know their fucking you, so you sorta have to support them, but know that they are also sort of fucking me just so that I can support both of you.
