The Maroon Van

So I was crossing the intersection, a block from the grocery store, on my walk up to the store this morning to get items to refill the fridge.  Everything was going normal until I noticed that someone had run the light and was closing in on me. I jumped back out of the way but caught the passenger side mirror with my left side. Luckily her van has breakaway mirrors so it was just a hard hit, but not as hard as it could have been.

So what did she do? She locked up her tires and almost stopped but when she almost ran into someone else, she must have decided to get out of there. So she sped away. I didn’t get her plate, but she was driving a late 90s, maroon Ford Aerostar van. She also had a couple kids with her, so I’m sure she was in a hurry to drop them off at the local school. So if I really wanted to track her down again, I’m sure I could, unless she changes vehicles and approaches to the school.

Is it really that important to get your kids to school that you’ll run a light and hit pedestrians in the crosswalk? I’ll admit that I hoped she ran the next light at Sunset and would be hit by a truck in the driver’s side. I don’t want her kids to pay for her mistakes, only her. But whatever, these people will never learn. People are run over in crosswalks every day in this city. And most of they time they are probably avoidable. I know this, so when I noticed her blowing through the intersection (where plenty of people honked at her because of her idiocy) I tried to get out of the way. I don’t need to take a full on hit by a van from a motorist who is most likely uninsured.

I had someone tell me I should have used my fist to shatter her windshield. Yeah sure, I’ll get right on intentionally breaking my arm. Then when she still runs, or I find out she’s uninsured, I’ll try to explain that to my insurance company and employer when I can no longer work. Luckily it was only her mirror that hit me, cause it could have been much worse had I not been able to get out of the way. And luckily it was my left side, which was already hurting anyway. I’m sure I’ll be more sore tomorrow, but after that long nap I took this afternoon I don’t feel too sore. But yeah, I’m sure I’ll be sore for a few more days.

Reminds me of college, when one of my business classes was inexplicably canceled one day…Next session the teacher told the story, where he was hit by a guy in a Benz crossing the street, with him ending up almost completely underneath the car at the crosswalk. The driver jumped out and shouted “Look what you did to my car!” My teacher shouted back from underneath the vehicle “Are you kidding, look what you did to me!”
