Placita Indians of Olvera Street
So yesterday was about getting the hell out of the apartment. With no real destination in mind, except for lunch at Phileppe’s, my neighbor and I set out with a MTA Day Pass in hand. We were just going to ride the trains until we finally found something to do. No mission in mind took us past the Watts Towers (which are under renovation), a fire in the hood, a quick photo stop at the 110/105 interchange, ending up in the middle of nowhere, then finally down at Olvera Street on our way to grab lunch.
On the way through Olvera, I noticed the Placita Indians (Aztec) were dancing, so why not go over and watch for a bit. Today was about no real plan, so we had time. I’m surprised I’ve never stopped to watch them perform. I guess I always figured it’d be a pickpocket’s dream, or just that I’m not a fan of crowds. It was a pretty good time.

The photo above was a challenge to catch as the kid kept moving around as he would join in the dance, or try to avoid others while he stood and watched. Finally I was able to snap a shot of his headdress. Skulls were a general theme with the headdresses but this one the only one I saw with a more realistic looking skull. Most were very ornate and shiny hand made cloth skulls.
All in all it was a fun Sunday. It beat sitting around on the computer all day, sleeping (as if that could happen), or watching cable. I think we were gone for about five hours, and time seemed to fly by.

Nice! Did you go to the cemetary?
